"A family on the verge of a breakdown"
Seven-year-old Olive Hoover lives in a special family. Her father Richard is a failed mental coach, her brother Dwayne refuses to talk, her uncle Frank is homosexual and suicidal, her grandfather Edwin is addicted to heroin and her mother Sheryl is slowly starting to go crazy. When Olive is told she can enter the final of the Little Miss Sunshine contest, the whole family decides to travel from Albuquerque to California in their old Volkswagen van.

Solid film, in which successful and less successful scenes look for a balance. The starting point is well worth the effort: a so-called road movie in which very diverse family members take a trip together in a rickety Volkswagen van. Despite the layering of the characters, Little Miss Sunshine is a somewhat simplistic film. The simplicity of the plot is also a weakness. I didn't find all the 'jokes' worth the effort, and it is then in acting that actors like Paul Dano and Steve Carrell have to take the lead. I especially found the ending a bit annoying, Abigail Breslin was more of an exaggerated jump in the field than a promising child actress. Still, in summary, my influence is still quite positive, because of the sincere attempt at an easy plot with complex characters. 3* (ps Matt Ross did a lot of copying for Captain Fantastic, say... Or do we call that getting inspired?

Wonderful movie. Little Miss Sunshine continues to move as it revises, and the Hoover family, with all its flaws, continues to captivate. The humor has an ironic and dark undertone and the characters have many problems, but never become caricatures of themselves. The film has a wonderful vibe and you can already feel the comic undertone when you introduce the various characters, despite all the drama. But directors Dayton and Faris take their characters seriously and despite the fact that they sometimes come across as complete idiots, they are still people of flesh and blood.
Breslin is at the center of this madness when daughter Olive, who wants to enter a beauty pageant and gets her family to travel there on a bus. Every family member has their own problems, but in the end they all come along. And of course, during this journey they will come closer together and face their problems, but the way this is done is extremely original and satisfying. The actors are all doing great and Carell in particular shows here again that he can do more than play funny characters. The ending shows in a beautiful way that you have to be content with who you are and what you have. Tile wisdom, but if it's all so entertaining, it doesn't matter to me.

A little too bland, nothing. Not badly directed and certainly not acted, but it doesn't really amount to much. Feel good, yes, but such a final scene in which the whole family comes on stage is not my idea of humor after all. Here and there a sharper or cynical edge that provides some welcome spice. Abigail Breslin is not doing a bad job at all (nowadays it is much less smooth) as a key figure in the family road trip.
