Of course you always experience films about the loss of a child with a certain respect because of the sadness of the event, the suffering, the guilt ... but this "Tonio" is not one of the very strong films with this theme.
It is a good film that shows how the drama is experienced in different ways and that reaches its best level when the father actually wants to relive his son, as it were, and in his immense grief even lives with the thought of undoing the accident create.
However, the script is somewhat difficult, but despite the divergent sentiments that are discussed, there is no exaggeration in that area.

It has to be just about the worst thing that can happen to you as a parent. Seeing your child snatched from life, from his/her future. Tonio has become a painful and strong portrait of how the Van der Heijden family copes with the loss of their son. A difficult mission for Paula Van der Oest to put this into images, but in my opinion she succeeded in creating a serene portrait, although the film is not flawless.

The course of the film remains fascinating because they opted to hark back to Tonio's beautiful moments as a baby, child or teenager on the basis of flashbacks. Sometimes a little too much staggered which makes you rattle too abruptly with your feelings. It leads to a leveling off of your involvement with the tragic events. In any case, beautiful interpretations by Bokma and Lodeizen. Painful images here and there, from both the DVD and the bumbling polite conversations with Jenny or other students.

Didn't strike me as a promising candidate for a book adaptation, in that respect they have managed to make quite a bit of it. A nice touch, for example, was to really give Tonio's favorite music a role in the film. Excellent acting from Lodeizen; I was less charmed by Bokma's role (I don't like him a bit in recent years anyway). Production-wise, the Telefilm level is not completely surpassed.
