“Stop bothering Chin. What's over, is over”, says Lung towards the end of the film to his girlfriend's new admirer. Actually, that last sentence describes in a nutshell the full synopsis of this film, which failed to pull me to the edge of my seat. For that I didn't find this loss of a relationship between two people, who largely live apart from each other, interesting enough, despite the sometimes beautiful shots of (nocturnal) Taipei.

Again very mediocre.

Yang and I just don't get along. While a Tsai and Hou succeeded in making fascinating films, Yang's films are mainly average and unremarkable. This film also floats around a bit, without really appealing.

Visually it is also all so dry. Taipei as a city never comes into its own, the use of color is gray and unattractive and the camera work also seems mainly functional. And if Yang tries something (for the big neon commercials for example), it just looks ugly.

Furthermore, the characters are not too fascinating and Yang remains mainly a storyteller, rather than a full-blooded director. I think his films are fairly substandard in terms of direction, so that the stories he wants to tell are doomed to be boring from the start.

His films are rarely really bad or irritating, but they last far too long and simply fail to captivate. Not my director I'm afraid.

1.5*

Very nice as an atmospheric portrait of a city, with those images of rows of cars (beautifully made with a bit of zoom) and apartment buildings and 'neon advertisements that glitter and beckon' and of people's lives in them. But it is precisely the very lives of the main characters that fascinate a lot less. Especially on a superficial level, how they are lonely in the big city (and a Sofia Coppola once portrayed that much better, but Antonioni often did that better too) is still OK, but not on a deeper level. And towards the end the emphasis is increasingly on that. While that is not Yang's forte. He is good at creating atmosphere, but the content is less interesting. The criticism I gave at The Terrorizers also applies here a bit, but just a little less strongly. So the score is slightly higher. Rounded up to 3.5*.
