Maria Marten, or The Murder in the Red Barn plot

"Sensational! Eerie! Sinister! Weird! The most unusual picture of the year!"

William Corder is an evil man with a heart as dark as night. However, he manages to hide this excellently behind a charming facade. Because of this, the people of his village see him differently than he really is and he seduces the young girl Maria Marten. During a dance at the Red Barn, Maria falls for the love of the gypsy Carlos, a young man who has a heart of gold under his torn shirt.

In hectic and busy times when films are becoming increasingly grand and compelling and when people are overloaded with stimuli all day long, it is sometimes nice to go back to basics. A time when cinema was still in its infancy and just an exciting Gothic story was enough to impress the unsuspecting viewer.

Netflix currently has a number of films by director George King, all of which were made in the 1930s and do little more than translate an original and exciting story into stage form. Of course it is all hopelessly outdated, but a film like this still has the necessary charm from time to time. I am therefore very grateful to Netflix for dedicating space to very old cinema like this.

The Murder in The Red Barn is certainly not a good film, it is hopelessly outdated and worn out, but it is good that films like this are preserved to help you realize where it all started. Creative directors like Tim Burton or David Lynch would never have been as good if a start hadn't been made somewhere.

So let me limit myself to thank you Netflix.
