The strong story is well presented and has quite a few beautiful moments to scare the viewer (especially at that time). Despite the fact that I didn't really like The Fly (from 1986), I had a great time with this Cronenberg film!

3.5*

Nice film about a group of people with telepathic abilities who together form a secret collective. A great starting point for a horror film like this and while the plot is entertaining enough, it could have been developed a bit more captivatingly. Reasonably atmospheric and with good special effects and make-up effects.

I reviewed this film shortly after The brood, and then I notice that this is all just a bit better : the cast is better across the board, Michael Ironside is perfectly cast with his unfavorable appearance, the "production values" are higher (the artwork of Robert Silverman's character –the artist Benjamin Pierce–, for example, looks impressive), and the FX are sublime, the only downside being the annoying and dated synthesizer music of Howard Shore. Still, this isn't the perfect Cronenberg film yet, as the tight thriller form has somewhat replaced the bleakness and eccentricity of his earlier films - that one famous scene is still impressive, but the telepathic abilities and what you can do with it doesn't get under my skin as much as, for example, the Psycho-Plasmics from The brood.
