George Kelby Jr., the son of murdered marshal and gunfighter George Kelby, lives a secluded and anonymous life with his wife Nora in the small town of Cross Creek as the owner of a drugstore called George Temple. In a drunken stupor, George shows the villagers that he is a former gunfighter. When this becomes widely known, it could attract other gunfighters and George therefore wants to leave Cross Creek. But then a wanted band of bank robbers led by the gunslinger Vinnie Harold comes to Cross Creek to exchange their horses. Harold learns from the saloon owner's son that Glenn Temple must be a faster shooter than he is. Harold stays in Cross Creek to challenge George, but George turns out not to have told his fellow villagers everything about his past...
