The Russian writer Isaac Babel became famous for the series of short stories 'Red Horseman'. He could describe that report on the Polish-Soviet war from 1920 so penetratingly because he had been there. That urge to really know what is going on marked his life. So he also knew that in the days of great terror in the Soviet Union, in the 1930s, his life was in immediate danger. What did he want to say about the last work he completed, the screenplay 'Old Square 4' - the address of the Communist Party leadership, before he was arrested and killed? And who was this man who decided to stay in Russia despite everything, even when his wife, mother and sister all went west? Why did he somehow want to stay true to the core of what the revolution had been when he could only rarely and only in the beginning realize what he had in mind? Later, when Babylon has long since fallen victim, his daughter also wonders, "Was this man retarded?"
