Wasabi plot

"For those who take their action raw."

The rude detective Hubert is advised by the commissioner to take a short vacation. Hubert reluctantly accepts this. Then he gets a bizarre phone call from Japan. A notary tells him that Miko, the love of his life whom he has not seen for 20 years, has died under strange circumstances. However, she has not forgotten him, because he turns out to be her legal heir. What his left him is more than a will, more than a gift, more than a problem. It is Yumi Yoshimido, his very recalcitrant daughter. Together with his old colleague Momo, he turns Tokyo upside down to help Yumi out of the most dire situations.

Definitely another entertaining police comedy in which Jean Reno is back in his place as a reckless cop who has his smart tricks. This time with a very nice funny plot that sometimes goes a bit on the drama side. We will have many fun adventures with Reno and his clumsy companion in Japan where we can also enjoy the humor and also the touch of drama. I also thought that daughter was a nice thing and beautifully portrayed. What was a shame was that the action scenes were stretched a bit too far apart, but we can still reap the benefits of Reno's fists. Also that scene in that amusement arcade was great.

Definitely another entertaining French action comedy with hero Reno.

Jean Reno is a hero. Dry, cranky head that is constantly on a look of 'don't you dare speak to me' and a right punch that sends people flying meters through the air. Add to that the fact that he effortlessly eats a plate of the hottest crap in the world without batting an eyelid and that he also sucks at stupid Japanese dance games: Jean Reno is the only action hero who can get away next to Jean-Claude van Damme come up with that effeminate language called French (yes, I'm kidding folks, don't feel offended)!

Wasabi clearly has Luc Besson's hand in the script, while Krawczyk also shows his quick montage of the Taxi films. All not very surprising anymore, but for a quick comedy with a lot of action it all works great. In that respect, Wasabi is nowhere really surprising (apart from the perfectly French-speaking Japanese), but it's all so much fun that I don't care anymore that half of it is pretty cliché and inherent to French cinema in the meantime. Humor and a lot of action make this film exceptionally enjoyable, Jean Reno also belongs in more action films in my opinion.

The action is not much, the humor is of a dubious level and some character development is also missing. When I see that Besson is behind the script, I understand it better. A smooth film that keeps moving all the time, with now and then some boenk-boenk music in between. I didn't even like Reno very much, not to mention the Japanese daughter. In the end there wasn't enough left for me to give this a sufficient rating. I was slightly bored with this movie.
