Good film about a simple young man who is exploited by his boss when his mother dies. A beautiful story with a beautiful main character. The whole thing reminded me a bit of a John Irving film adaptation. The tone is also somewhat different (partly due to the fantasy element). Well dressed and Stellan Skarsgård is convincing in the leading role.

Certainly one of Stellan Skarsgård's oldest films - never saw him so young - but still a sublime act as the boy, not exactly weak-minded, but naive, in good faith, a sight that does not speak in his favor, in other words a willing victim of ridicule, teasing and oppression.
Solid and gripping - I suspect a true event - the film fascinates throughout its entire length. Only a bit surprised when the girl Anna out of nowhere suddenly accuses Sven of being the blame for all the domestic misery.. Perhaps that and the events surrounding his sole possession are the impetus for the dramatic end.

In terms of style, it reminded me a bit of that other Swedish classic from the 80s, Pelle Erobreren (Film, 1987). Here with a young Skarsgard who grows up as an orphan on a farm with a heartless landowner who is also a factory boss. Sven is a hard worker and never dies, making him a valuable and ideal worker.

When he ends up with an independent family, he experiences love and pay for his work, against the wishes of the factory boss who considers him his property.

Some beautiful scenes and well captured by Skarsgard. Not a masterpiece for me, but a very solid farmer's film.
