Not as good as I thought I remembered. Nevertheless, a beautiful film by top director William Wyler about a peace-loving Quaker family that is in trouble of conscience because of the advancing American Civil War. Great performances, including the remarkable supporting role of good old Marjorie Main, but the most striking figure in the film is Samantha…

Some shots evoke memories of the works of 19th century painters.

Mediocre film about a Quaker family that tries to keep aloof from the American Civil War. The story ripples a little too quietly and it really takes too long before the real dramatic developments make their appearance. Quite grandly set up and the decoration is also fine. Nevertheless, this film has not quite stood the test of time.

I also found it mediocre. Much too sentimental, humorous and steeped in nostalgia. I had expected a different kind of "american civil war" film, but this had an incredibly high Little House on the Prairie content. You could almost say it's more comedy for two hours, with that harmonium and wife Eliza going to sleep in the barn, with the mischievous horse races with neighbor Sam and the three daughters of a widow who want to seduce son Josh ostentatiously[ /spoiler]. Mother also puts her 18-year-old son (Anthony Perkins) to bed. Add to that an irritating daughter in love and then you already have a reasonably toe-curling whole.

The Birdwell family are Quakers and therefore anti-war; you can feel it coming... will they stay true to their faith or will they still fight when danger lurks around the corner? Cliche! All the drama is squeezed into the last 15 to 20 minutes. Gary Cooper is also not my favorite actor of that time and was not attractive to me either; what moderation, especially in his scenes with the neighbour... Thanks to the good cinematography, it still looks good, but I wouldn't recommend it.
