A dull film with dull dialogue and inferior acting. A musical drama with some Cold War elements.

The two main characters, played by Baryshnikov and Hines, who seem ideologically opposed, gradually find common ground through their love of dance and their thirst for freedom. The numerous choreographies (ballet and tap dancing) didn't do much for me, except for one where they dance together in sync to a modern number. But at times, it feels too much like a script written to promote their artistic careers. The film has a punchy soundtrack, of which Lionel Richie's "Say You Say Me" is the most famous song. The only bright spot in the cast is the ever-beautiful Helen Mirren as the ex-flame of the Russian defector. A very mediocre film that, at almost 140 minutes, is truly far too long.
