Richard Attenborough is a gifted director and Chaplin is very neatly directed. We are dealing with a pleasant biopic that neatly outlines the life of Charles Chaplin. But Attenborough is quintessentially Hollywood and doesn't take risks easily, and Chaplin suffers from that. There is a bit of whining back and forth about Chaplin's life and it's all amusing but lacks sharp analysis. It is a distance narration with many formalities and Chaplin's questionable aspects such as his attitude on the set and relationships with extremely young girls (54 - 17...) are not addressed. In Chaplin we are dealing with a neat biopic about an interesting character, but it is not a really sharp vision of the life of Charlie Chaplin.

Nice biopic about comedian/actor/director Charles Chaplin. The film actually highlights too many facets of his eventful life and therefore comes across as rather fragmentary. The different time periods are well and fairly detailed with beautiful sets and costumes. Robert Downey Jr. carries the film and convinces in the title role.

Fairly well-behaved, but a nice glimpse into Chaplin's life as far as it's warranted with this film. The interesting aspect is the look behind the scenes. Nice how now iconic Chaplin scenes have a structure in this print. As a result, the film contains many recognizable elements that a Chaplin enthusiast can appreciate.

Unfortunately, the film never manages to emphasize a dramatic conflict. A rippling progression. If heavier obstacles occur, this is handled with some lightness. For example, a number of interesting themes are not addressed to their fullest and the film never manages to put the true venom to the fore. This is unfortunate because, the film itself emphasizes, Chaplin's life is more drama than smiles.

Robert Downey Jr plays his role perfectly. His likeness is unparalleled and Chaplin's mannerisms are spot on. Yet Downey jr knows how to make it a character all its own. It is not an imitation, which could easily have been the case. So it's an extra pity that everything around Downey Jr is not quite right. Especially with this long playing time I would have liked to see more depth.
