Hitchcock in the cold war atmosphere with spies, double spies, defectors etc...

Runs a bit long, is far from the best Hitchcock, but all in all it's not too bad, especially in the slightly too few moments when Hitch makes characters and viewers eager for what is being said and what is about to happen.

France is definitely present, surprisingly also with Michel Piccoli, Philippe Noiret, Danny Robin...and also in the music and the sets.

Not a strong Hitchcock but still worth watching for some nice scenes. This movie was not rated during the sneak preview. A common complaint was that the film was too long and that the ending was not to my liking.

Then Hitchcock cut it and put a different end to it. I think the ending is better, but I think it's a shame to delete some scenes. There are quite interesting scenes in between that also make the whole thing a bit clearer.

In a nutshell, the movie didn't get much better. The blueray features several alternate endings and deleted scenes.

Hitchcock meets Leon Uris, two heavyweights in their profession, one as a filmmaker, the other as a writer. Does that offer the expected fireworks? No Unfortunately. Even such a collaboration can be disappointing, something I already feared when I saw the numbers.

Mystery trumps in the beginning with the defection of a Russian leader. It is the starting point for a lot of scheming, meetings, a lot of characters, the necessary secrecy about espionage in Cuba during the Cuba Crisis and the search for a rat. Then I forget to mention the soundtrack by Maurice Jarre, not least of all. Dubois' company is strong and stealing the briefcase is beautiful. Already mentioned a lot of pluses you would say....

Yet it does not succeed at all with this Topaz that drags along at a slow pace, does not get exciting anywhere and certainly does not want to captivate. The characters are not appealing and what is at stake neither and the film lasts too long. It is that the master does make his usual appearance in the beginning otherwise you would almost doubt whether this is actually a Hitchcock product. Anyway, this wasn't quite up to the standard I'm used to from dear Alfred.
