Quite recognizable "Hichcockian". Some strange sweet moments (travelling circus), but all in all a nice adventure with a nice finale in and on the Statue of Liberty.

I bought the Hitchcock Blu-ray box over a year ago and haven't watched a movie of it yet. Started with this one today. Image has already been beautifully restored and sound, despite being 2.0, is very good thanks to the HD-MA. The movie is entertaining, acting okay, but I'm not quite sure how the police are convinced that Fry is the saboteur, I was expecting a little more evidence to be gathered. Fry also falls off the torch very easily. The ending is somewhat unsatisfactory.

"A lot of good ideas don't make a good movie," was one of Hitchcock's conclusions about this virtual remake of The 39 Steps (and blueprint for North by Northwest). Robert Cummings and Lane are some unfortunate choices in the lead roles, but Norman Lloyd is impressive as the true saboteur from the title and Otto Kruger is brilliantly chosen as the terrorist mastermind. Cumming plays a worker at a fighter jet factory and is forced to flee when he is blamed for a massive fire that kills a colleague. He finds sympathy with a blind man [Vaughan Glazer] and takes his daughter [Priscilla Lane] on a journey across the US to prove his innocence. Full of colorful, superbly written characters, including an adventurous truck driver [Murray Alper] and the special members of a circus, the climax (a shooting in a cinema and the legendary finale at the Statue of Liberty) is unforgettable.
