Made in Holland Wordt Dutch Design plot

In November 1999 Vredestein decided to move the loss-making bicycle tire factory in Doetinchem to a low-wage country. The marking on the tires therefore changes from 'Made in Holland' to 'Dutch Design'. Filmmakers Maarten Schmidt and Thomas Doebele observe the whole process: the work in the empty-looking factory, where the workers perform their movements practiced for years, the meetings with the always cheerful director and the application procedure for the new factory in India, where only the presumption of union membership is sufficient for rejection. Vredestein's loyal Dutch workers, who often worked in the factory for decades, resign themselves to the situation with regret. They are often guest workers who came to the Netherlands as cheap labor themselves and now see their work leave. With their careful and detailed registration, Schmidt and Doebele show the human dimension of economic globalization.
