Shooting Dogs plot

"What would you risk to make a difference?"

Rwanda 1994. The ethnic conflict between Hutus and Tutsis kills hundreds of thousands of people. British priest Christopher and teacher Joe Connor are in the country at the time. They face a tough choice: to get themselves to safety and leave the country as soon as possible or to help hundreds of innocent Tutsis who are at risk of falling prey to the civil war.

And the world stood by and watched...

The Rwandan genocide is one of the most shameful events of the twentieth century. Shooting Dogs throws stones enough at the Blue Helmets, who failed in their damn duty to protect the Tutsis. And this because of a rotten bureaucratic culture in the West that places rules and procedures above moral principles. And the story keeps repeating itself if you look at the Syria conflict now. Well played by Dancy and Hurt, two impotent witnesses in a film that has the feel of a documentary. It all keeps dragging on and the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads was allowed to fall a little earlier for me. The drama really sinks in, especially at the end. Although I liked Hotel Rwanda better, the authenticity and sincerity of Shooting Dogs is certainly to be commended.

The fact that I rate this film so highly is mainly due to the subject matter. The film fits nicely in the list of Hotel Rwanda and Sometimes in April. This movie was also filmed in Rwanda, assisted by survivors of the great drama. Personally, it remains fascinating that in a genocide of 800,000 people (about 265 times the number of victims of 9/11), the UN turned its back on its view and did not bother to intervene. In Belgium it was in the news for a while, I can remember, because of the murder of 10 Belgian blue helmets. It would be years before I learned the real deal of the genocide in Rwanda.

The film is not particularly special as a film, except for the fact that it was filmed in Rwanda and therefore must also have been filmed with Rwandans. The idea alone must be exciting, especially since the film came out barely 11 years later. This must still be fresh in the minds of those people. Whether they were/are Hutu or Tutsi.

Shooting dogs focuses on 2 white main characters, which came across better with Rwandan characters at Hotel Rwanda and Sometimes in April. Although both men are certainly not bad. I want them to make more of these films, it remains a black page in recent history that should certainly not be forgotten...
