Adams Æbler plot
"When it rains, it pours"
Adams Æbler is a modern religious fable about faith and the struggle between good and evil. Adam (Ulrich Thomsen), a neo-Nazi, is sentenced to 12 weeks of community service and is sent to the priest Ivan (Mads Mikkelsen). Adam is instructed to bake an apple pie with the apples from the tree in front of the church. The apples are attacked by birds, worms, and lightning. Ivan thinks this is the devil's work to test him.

Film about an ex-prisoner, who ends up in a group of surrealist figures for his rehabilitation. The intentionally unbalanced story is richly filled with absurd humour, but that is where the fun wears off in the long run. The trigger-happy Ali Kazim and Ole Thestrup (the local doctor) steal the show as far as I'm concerned.
In general, it's a bit disappointing.

Danish dried up mess with a creative mind at the helm. Jensen's film looks sleek again, sounds like clockwork, the story is more than just a joke and the widely acclaimed Mikkelsen has a formidable opponent in Thomsen. Certainly the first half of the film is simply enjoyable with a big grin of his granite head, which falls from one surprise to the other.
Like when he bumps into Ivan just after he beat him black and blue. That nose will never work again. You can't ignore the scene with the crows, that is also very funny, but extra fun because the excited, shocked Gunnar also gets Ivan over him. Black, dry and absurd, this humor and yet Jensen keeps his characters in line.
In the sense that they don't become bouncy balls from the plot and the fun, they always keep a certain amount of flesh and blood. The film then slows down for a while when Job starts to stir vigorously, but with this basis it can handle that drama just fine. The old Thestrup is once again grandiose and the lock still has a wail of a joke somewhere in the house. Something about Indonesia and a child.

Movies with a mystical, religious atmosphere have always attracted me. If they come from Denmark again and Mads Mikkelsen is there, I'll be there. These Adam's apples had been on my list for a while and therefore did not disappoint me. First of all with a very nice concept that is Biblically inspired by the story of Job who was put to the test, but never denied God.
That line is extended in the film to the Reverend Ivan, with a great Mads Mikkelsen putting in a strong performance with Ulrich Thompson (Adam) in his wake. The two are well attuned to each other and the sometimes bewildered surprised somewhat stupid look of Adam is very nice to watch. Ivan, on the other hand, is the gullible naive who bends and minimizes every evil, much to Adam's chagrin. The other characters are great too, with the doctor leading the way with his enthusiastic anamnesis of his patients.
What also makes the film very entertaining is the subtle humor, the no-nonsense approach of Jensen to bring something absurd in apparently normal situations. If only the discussion about the coffee biscuits while the lady pours out her heart whether she wants an abortion or not. Sometimes it's also the little things like the music in the car, some facial expression or the dry humor that is brought. All these situations of drama, humor and mystery are perfectly mixed into one whole. In my opinion an absolute winner! Beautiful!
