One of the most enjoyable Pierre-Richards. In addition to the comedy of the situations, there is also a hint of a social slant: the idea of choosing a human being as a toy for a rich child (!) and the distance between the industrialist boss and John-in-the-cap.

So in its entirety: charming, pleasant and not hollow.

Le Jouet is a serious comedy. A satire. A film with a social critique slant. A film in which Pierre Richard plays a rather restrained role. Fortunately, he has his slapstick and chaotic moments, but for most of the film, he serves the story. A nonsensical story, by the way. Richard is hired against his will as a playmate and toy for the spoiled son of a wealthy newspaper magnate.

The film critically examines society, particularly the wealthy upper class, who wallow in arrogance and are insensitive to the needs of the less fortunate. The film thrives on the humor that springs from overly exaggerated characters and situations. Most of the characters in this film are unlikable. Even Richard isn't necessarily so. He has good intentions that are suppressed by feelings of revenge against the household he's now part of. Sometimes these feelings of revenge result in a few wacky scenes. Sometimes they culminate in silliness. Most of the time, however, the humor lies in the exaggeration. I mostly didn't find the film truly funny.

Satirical humor, then. In a film where Richard plays subdued. And when he does go on a rampage, it doesn't really fit the seriousness of the satire. What an annoying little boy, by the way. He didn't get any love or attention. Pathetic. I would have loved to show that spoiled brat every corner of his toy-filled room. The other characters didn't do much for me either. The story didn't interest me either. I barely laughed. I simply didn't find much to it.
