Very Bad Things plot

"They've been bad. Very bad."

A group of friends travel to Las Vegas to celebrate a bachelorette party. When one of them accidentally kills a prostitute, it starts a series of events in which the bodies pile up at a rapid pace. The friends soon get into an argument, which will show who wants to go the furthest, and above all: at what cost...?

Thematically, a distant predecessor or source of inspiration for The Hangover, but funny.

The concept of black comedy is taken very far here and I can only be happy about that. The Vegas trip gone wrong, this is where things really go wrong, not the lame stuff. A good cast plays very hysterical and over the top, but don't forget to throw in some clever dialogue.

Christian Slater is once again put to good use here, which unfortunately we see far too little. Very underrated actor, because in most of the films I saw him play he was often the strong link in the whole. Jeremy Piven is (partly rightly) praised for his role in Entourage, but here too he has a quick tongue. After Swingers, Jon Favreau shows again for me how good his delivery is. The rest depends a bit, although they all contribute well to the hysteria. Even Cameron Diaz plays wonderfully mean.

The nice thing about the film is that there are simply no concessions. Black is black, there is no gray in between. As it should. Nice!

As far as I'm concerned, the unmistakable precursor to "The Hangover".

I remember vividly imagining going from one unbelievable situation to another and after an hour and a half thinking how the fuck could this have happened.

top.

Peter Berg's directorial debut, and although Berg has delivered misses and beautiful films in recent years, Very Bad Things can still be there, especially because I expected this film to be quite disappointing after all these years.

A bachelor party that got out of hand is the starting point of this cynical and crude comedy, which then mainly relies on very bad decisions and the tensions within the group of men. And except for the usual shocking Diaz, all the men are well cast for their roles and Slater in particular excels as the mastermind of the group. In a humorous way, the paranoia of some is heightened and, above all, it makes fun of the usual marriage stress, ridiculous rehearsals and the need to play the wild beast at your bachelor party. As far as I'm concerned, it's all sheer nonsense.

Particularly noteworthy is the group chemistry, the brawl between Robert and Lois, Michael's collapse and how things go from bad to worse. Something that at some point you can wonder if it isn't enough, but it doesn't really bother me. Very Bad Things is just entertaining, that's all, but this print isn't meant for anything else either.
