1825. The year of the officers' revolt against the Tsar. Maddocks, a Scottish man, has won a ring by gambling, with the initials SVD on it. These initials represent the secret movement that the Tsar wants to depose. Maddocks is introduced to the higher political circles of Saint Petersburg by a former lover.
