The lighthearted, humorous screenplay by director Scott Sanders and Arthur Krystal about the likable thief Maclin (Baldwin), who loves his old dog and jazz, reminds me of the work of Elmore Leonard. We see Alec Balwin at work in one of his better roles, and he is excellently supported by Rebecca DeMornay as Petrone, Andre Braugher as Dink, and Michael Jai White as Pointy. The film hits the mark in terms of atmosphere and is perhaps underestimated by critics and moviegoers (although the latter are always right). Highly recommended entertainment...

Baldwin is in fine form in this crime film with comedic touches. The story traverses the American and Italian underworlds with a supporting role for the police, without the characters being further fleshed out. This makes neutrality a great asset in this film, ensuring the focus remains on a single goal. The film is peppered with jazz, musette, and funk spanning the decades at the most unusual moments, which makes it funny. The record collection is an example of the protagonist's perfection, as he threatens to lose himself in his love for his pet. De Mornay is excellent as the eccentric detective. Pay attention to which LP covers appear; they don't actually exist, brilliantly conceived... 3.6*
