After a discussion in the forum I watched this movie differently than I normally do. After 50 minutes I was at about 1.5 stars. The intrigue and character introduction is 20 to 30 minutes too long. Then saw an entertaining movie. Thought the effects were a bit mixed, but mostly nice. But I do enjoy myself with people struggling to survive a collapsed building, working their way down a flat in flames, and a city on fire. Enough to complain about Earthquake, but also enough to enjoy. I arrive at 3 stars, after 50 minutes I had forgotten my new way of watching a movie.

Nice film in which the residents of Los Angeles are startled by a violent earthquake. A typical 1970s Hollywood disaster film with the obligatory lengthy introduction of all characters. A somewhat boring start, but fortunately the second half is a lot more entertaining. Especially nice to see the special effects from that time.

Earthquake is a good movie.

I find the first half of the film a bit tedious. It really doesn't get boring. There are some funny and good parts in it. Some of the characters were nice too. ( for example that drunk man in the cafe, or the stunt biker. ) The movie only gets really interesting when we get the big earthquake. In 2015, this obviously looks dated, but remember that this is a 1974 film. It would be unfair to compare this film by today's standards. For a 1974 film, I thought the special effects were very well done. I thought the earthquake happened well. I also thought the setting after the big earthquake was well done. The film shows in a good way that the city is in ruins.

Where the film before the big earthquake was a bit long-winded, the film after the big earthquake is not at all. I found it very interesting to see how the people coped with the disaster and how she tried to save herself and others.

The acting in this movie is pretty good. None of the cast delivers an unforgettable performance, but I think the acting in this film is more than decent. The music is by John Williams. He delivers a good score that fits the film well.

I thought the movie ended a bit abruptly. I had a bit of a feeling of: Couldn't they have closed the film in a nicer way? Also, there is nothing wrong with the last part of the film. That part in the sewer was well done. But after this part the movie suddenly ends a bit abrubt.

All in all, I think this is a decent movie. If the first half of the movie had had a little more momentum, my grade would have been even higher.

3.5 stars for this movie.
