The time of the depression. Cecilia is a familiar face at the local cinema and the new film 'Purple Rose of Cairo' is so beautiful that she buys another ticket with her sister the next day. By the time she goes for the fifth time, one of the characters from the film sees her sitting in the room. This Tom Baxter, played by Gil Sheperd, steps off the canvas and goes into town with Cecilia. When Gil Sheperd hears about this, he fears that his character will damage his reputation and in the cinema the film cannot go on without Tom Baxter. In the meantime, the latter is having a great time with Cecilia; The problem is that she is married...

A nice Woody Allen movie with an original story.
It also feels very refreshing to see an Allen without a neurotic protagonist in the form of Allen himself, or someone who could pass for him. No, Allen makes a film once, with which he wants to show that he has a lot of love for cinema itself. He brings that out in a beautiful way in this Purple Rose of Cairo.
Mia Farrow plays a good lead role, but can't match Jeff Daniels, who manages to fill in his double role almost perfectly. I actually liked the actors on the silver screen the most. Not only is it nice that they suddenly start talking and discussing with the people in the cinema, but the dialogues that are used are also funny. For example the woman, who says all the time that the role Daniels plays is just a minor part, which makes Daniels react annoyed every time. Those moments always brought a smile to my face.
The ending was also nice. I was already curious how it would end, but Allen knows how to do that very nicely, with the love for cinema again in a beautiful way.

Recently bought a box of Woody Allen movies and this Purple Rose of Cairo was the most I expected. It was also one of the reasons for the purchase. On paper it seems yes, the perfect film. The plot lends itself to kicking it to a magical 82 minutes.
The intro may start out fabulously, but after that the film never reaches the level I expected. Too many things are too ordinary; with the dialogues in the lead. But at times it hits you and most of the time it's just limp. I also couldn't appreciate the humor that was put into it (yes, except for 1 or 2 moments maybe).
Kudos to Mia Farrow, who takes Purple Rose to the next level. A really great performance from her. Good movie, but unfortunately didn't live up to my (too high) expectations.

Woody Allen does what he does best: say something serious with humor and absurdity. Cecilia (Mia Farrow) is a waitress with a colorless existence. The Great Depression is on and she's married to a lazy bastard. Unable to cope with the cynicism of reality, she surrenders to escapism. In the dream world of the cinema, she finds the happy moments that she otherwise lacks. The dragon is poked with the magic of the silver screen, but also with the lack of magic in everyday life.
Jeff Daniels plays a great double role. As a hero with a pith helmet and simple ideals, he lacks any sense of reality; he is too good for this world. As an actor, he is a hypocritical and insufferable arrivist. Cecilia's sister is played by Stephanie Farrow, who are sisters in real life too.
The zeitgeist of the 1930s is well represented, with attention to the then leisure culture. For example, they enter a funhouse and there are advertising posters for comics (funnies). The Purple Rose of Cairo from 1935 has an illogical plot: it starts as an adventure on the Nile, but continues as a romance in New York. No one is looking for that purple rose anymore.
