"There's being a kid. There's being a adult. And then there's that year in between."
Vada's stepmother is pregnant and Vada starts to think more and more about her biological mother, who died in childbirth. When she has to write an essay at school about an admirable person you've never met, she doesn't choose her favorite poet but her mother. She goes to LA in search of her mother's history and stays with her uncle, whose new friend has a son who helps her with her research.
