Kubo lives a quiet, normal life in a small village, until a ghost from the past turns his life upside down by rekindling an ancient quarrel. Kubo is now being chased by gods and monsters. To survive, he must search for a magical suit of armor once worn by his late father, a legendary samurai warrior.

Kubo [Art Parkinson] is a boy whose father has disappeared without a trace and whose mother is so overcome with grief that Kubo should really take care of her more. Kubo sometimes cheers her up by telling mystical stories that he literally brings to life with origami figures with the help of his magic guitar (with two strings, hence the title). This also endears him to his fellow villagers, but when a tragic event forces him to flee the village in search of a mystical object, he must also learn to trust Monkey [Charlize Theron] and Beetle [Matthew McConaughey]. Together they must overcome the necessary dangers.
Nice combination of CGI animation and animatronics (of which you can see a short making-of during the credits) results in a beautifully made film that is, however, a bit too heavy for the youth. The story doesn't have that many surprises, but the film is a feast for the eyes from the start. Striking are the modest, subtle voice interpretations of McConaughey and especially Charlize Theron, who plays an extremely effective role precisely because of her soft voice. The lack of slapstick is a relief.

I thought he was beautiful. A mix of adventure, suspense and humor (the beetle was a really hilarious character) and oh, how beautiful it all looks! If you are looking for a film with a family with children that is suitable for everyone (that is often a dilemma with us), then Kubo is highly recommended.

Watched this animated movie and thought it was highly recommended. Very nicely made and the story was also interesting and adventurous. Still quite exciting and maybe even a bit scary for young children. The film is definitely worth seeing and is also very suitable for adults.
Perhaps a lesser-known animated film, but it still had a well-known voice cast: Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, ...
Highly recommended!
