Bad News Bears plot
"The bases are loaded... so is the coach."
A former professional baseball player is hired to coach the youth team The Bears. He must lead the pitifully evil team to the championship at the expense of their arch-rivals, The Yankees.

Thornton plays on autopilot but even then he is good. Furthermore, the players of his team play nice roles and match well with the role of Thornton. It never gets very funny, but the light-hearted story is amusing and fine as a snack.

But aside from its lack of input, you do wonder why anyone would want to remake the original of this film. Horror franchises are also often guilty of this, but genre films like this are so entrenched in their genre clichés that there is little difference between a remake and a random other film within the genre.
Probably some names and characters that are the same, but there you have the type characters again. I've never seen the original, but I think I've seen this movie about 30 times. Old grunt who reluctantly has to coach a youth team full of losers. Everyone depressed, then a click after which everything gets better and better. Drama dip before the last game of course and then on to ... well, don't let me spoil it.
Linklater is completely unrecognizable. You might think that he has attempted a Rodriguezje, but he at least knows how to give his children's/youth films a face, no matter how hideous sometimes. This is just band work. Fortunately, Thornton is still in it, whose role is indeed a bit like Bad Santa, but a bit more brave.
It's all way too familiar territory, especially within a genre that I'm not that fond of anyway. That this is stretched to 110 minutes is actually too crazy for words.
