Definitely a very fun film with a continuous creepy atmosphere and tension.

This film should be higher as its rating is severely underrated.

Actors are fine and the effects were good.

3.5 stars

Wonderful all-out 90s version of The Thing... more or less. With some big names (Ben Affleck, Rose McGowan, Leiv Schreiber). Not all effects hold up (especially the CG at the end), but the practical effects are surprisingly effective. Nice tentacle work and those body snatcher-like practices always work. Leiv Schreiber's entire death scene (with lead-up) is genius! It borrows a lot from other, better-known genre films/classics, but with that generous layer of 90s cheese and the mysterious first half hour - deserted town - it is more than worth it!

Solid.

Phantoms is a horror science fiction film with a well-known cast, which has remained relatively under the radar. It also turned out to be a book adaptation. I'm actually curious about that book, because the fairly messy and confused approach of this film makes me believe that the source material is not very well written either.

The acting is passable, although no one can really be called great. I hardly even remember names like McGowan, and it really wasn't that long ago that I saw the movie. Names like Affleck are also doing okay, but mainly seem to have been cast in the wrong role. If Affleck is not someone in his younger years, it is a tough police officer. Schreiber fits a bit better. The only real one I seriously liked was O'Toole.

Film benefits from the unpredictable and versatile story that involves a whole host of concepts, which keeps the film shifting in tone. Makes a messy impression here and there, but it is also entertaining because it makes it difficult for the viewer to draw out the film. It is not completely unpredictable, but where it will go is, and I can praise that.

Effects are also quite nice for that time. Sometimes too clumsy, so the film never manages to be exciting or atmospheric, but nice and expensive and explosive. Lots of lights, lots of sound, I really appreciate that. It is just a pity that the film seems to start immediately with this, so that the viewer is not always given the opportunity to get to know the characters.

Entertaining because so much happens in it, but this film is obviously not good. I got through it quickly. It has a little bit of everything, but it uses too little of some ingredients, so the outcome is not completely perfect. Phantoms is a film that is difficult to completely forget given all the noise, but the quality is also not very strong.
