Excellent film about a boy who wants to learn karate to defend himself against some bullies at school. A nice underdog story with a great build-up and an exciting finale. Entertaining from start to finish. Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita are perfectly cast and their friendship is at the heart of the film.

I secretly still find this a very nice film that I re-watch every few years. Especially in more recent years I think about it a lot because we now have the series Cobra Kai, and before that because it was a recurring theme in How I Met Your Mother. Part 1 I think is the strongest of the three with Daniel, by the way, after a long time now not the only one that is indispensable for the series, but also the most dated. I also find the ending quite abrupt, there could have been something of a nice scene at the end (for comparison: the Karate Kid clone 'Sidekicks (1992 )' ends about the same, but has a nice closing scene afterwards).
