After seeing the creditable third part of Hatchet last week, today it was time for the first part.

Despite the fact that I didn't like this part, it was still entertaining to watch (it doesn't take long at 75 minutes either). The story is of course ridiculous, but the execution is actually funny. Since this movie is a pure Horror / Comedy, you should also watch it with a big wink. The first 45 minutes are pretty bland and boring, but fortunately it still contains some nudity (including Mercedes McNab who plays a very stupid blonde. She also posed naked for Playboy magazine) and also some humorous scenes and we also see briefly review the horror icons Robert Englund ("A Nightmare on Elm Street" movies) and Tony Todd ("Candyman" movies).

Only after the aforementioned 45 minutes does the film really get going and the indestructible Victor Crowley (the freak) goes wild with some beautiful, creative and above all gross kills on the swamp tour group. These kills were portrayed quite nicely and the blood spurted nicely from the torn or ripped body parts. Unfortunately, the film only lasts 30 minutes and then suddenly the film ends with an abrupt end. The cast is certainly not top-notch, but they all did a good job and certainly the three main protagonists Joel David Moore (playing Ben), Tamara Feldman (playing Marybeth) and Deon Richmond (playing Marcus ).

All in all nice to have seen and let's say on to the second part.

Right! That's how a slasher should be! I've heard some good stories about Hatchet, but hey, it wouldn't be the first time I'd heard rave stories about a film that didn't suit me at all in practice. But here the positive reactions turned out to be justified. Hatchet is just a lot of fun. It takes another half hour (after the intro scene that is) before you finally end up in the depths of the Louisiana swamps where Victor Crowley also roams, but even in that half hour the introduction of the characters and the humor is nice enough to not to annoy me. And the killer also turns out to be an excellent choice, who attacks the tourists with brutal violence and a lot of blood and inventiveness. Besides a nice pace with enough action, the film also never really gets stuck in too much predictability or dullness, and I didn't find the humor really bland anywhere - a danger that lurks in these kinds of films. Perhaps this straightforward slasher is qualitatively and purely objectively not worth the 4 stars, but I had so much fun with it that it just gets it. Recommended!

More of a comedy than a horror. But with a good sense of humour.

The comic approach prevents the horror, which occasionally rears its head, from breaking through very penetratingly. The horror is greatly exaggerated. It rains blood and limbs fly through the air. And while some of the effects look objectively like real horror, the film's comedic undertones don't make them come off as gross or gross. The gore, the kills and the creature simply cannot be taken seriously due to their ridiculous magnification. So humour.

A pity on one side. The background and appearance of the creature are actually quite horror worthy and the deformed perhaps deserved a more serious approach than he gets here. That choice was not made. So be it.

The other side is a successful combination of horror and humor. A combination that more often than not succeeds. Given the amount of laughter I endured, the combo in this film works fine. Successful humor in film is a scarce commodity. It's a shame that the creature's scary potential was sacrificed for that, but the sacrifice did make for a fine humorous film.
