The same year as Nightmare On Elm Street, two years after Tron and 25 years before Inception, this SF thriller was released in which Dennis Quaid plays Alex Gardner, a young man with telepathic abilities so strong that he can destroy the dreams of others. can access and influence. Government agent Bob Blair [Christopher Plummer] tracks him down and forces Alex to participate in experiments. Initially, with the help of Dr. Paul Novotny [Max von Sydow] and psychologist Jane DeVries [Kate Capshaw], he discovers how to help people cope with trauma, but when he meets Tommy Ray [David Patrick Kelly], who shares the same gifts, it slowly becomes clear that the government also wants to use Alex for less pure matters.

It is important to realize that CGI was only introduced two years earlier and that in 1984 the technique was still in its infancy. From that perspective, the special effects in the dream sequences are certainly not bad, and they are always in the service of the plot. A cast to die for completes a smooth, entertaining and reasonably intelligent film without too much pretension. Would David Lynch have cast David Patrick Kelly and Chris Mulkey for their roles in Twin Peaks following this film?

Mediocre film in which a man participates in a project in which he gains access to other people's dreams. An interesting fact in itself, but less interestingly executed. The different dream sequences are nicely designed. The characters don't know how to captivate and the plot doesn't really get going until very late in the film.

Predecessor of high concept film Inception and actually a lot more fun. Dennis Quaid does his usual grin and steals the show as a somewhat roguish man with special gifts. Max Von Sydow and Christopher Plummer are always good too. Kate Capshaw gets to play the graceful love interest. David Patrick Kelley is a convincing psycho.

The special effects are of course dated and the stop motion contortionist will make some people laugh. Still, some dream scenes are done pretty cool and contain effective horror elements like the zombies in the post-apocalyptic dream.

What really brings the film down is the infinitely clumsy soundtrack. What a childish synth riffs, terrible.
