Finally watched the first installment in the entire Mr. Horror series, and this wasn't a bad film at all. It has a really fun black-and-white before-and-after sequence with a Dracula-like character presenting the film. The film itself is very well shot. From the very beginning, we're drawn into the pitch-black (and slightly red-filtered) atmosphere. It's certainly constructed just how a horror film should be: not too much bombast, and of course, a dark atmosphere. The story is actually hilarious: young people stumble upon a farm inhabited by bats that have bitten the residents, and if you get bitten, you become a zombie. From that moment on, it's survival with a pack of bats on your heels.

The plot seems funny, and The Roost is, by the director's intention, nothing more than a parody, yet he still manages to deliver it in a compelling, dark way. The intro and outro are also funny, as mentioned, and Ti West also plays with time. With the intro and outro, you feel transported to a 1930s horror film, while The Roost still looks like a modern horror film. (By the way, the intro and outro have nothing to do with the film )

But other than that this is still a quite successful film.

Even with relatively limited financial resources, director Ti West proves himself a skilled craftsman when it comes to musical choices and atmosphere. The Roost benefits from a remarkably creepy impression that frequently manages to be effective. This partially compensates for the relatively ludicrous threat, which inspires absolutely no fear once it crawls out of the dark corners. West also handles the pace of the film a bit sluggishly, with several shots that drag on for too long and reveal too little. Thanks to the eerie music and the controlled buildup of tension, there's still plenty to be horrified, making The Roost a more than decent footnote for West's future. However, considering what he has created in the future, this is still a bit meager.
