Nice film about a crook duo on a cruise ship who have chosen a rich man as their target. The first half is a bit monotonous, and the whole lacks some of the sharp dialogue that often accompanied similar films from this era. The second half, however, is a lot more entertaining in which there are some more developments. Just not 3.5 stars.

A wonderful romcom with a naive Henry Fonda and a beautiful Barbara Stanwyck. The humor is between slapstick and the well-known dialogues from that time. The story is simple with a woman who normally cheats on men but falls in love with her 'victim'. The question is who wins, deceit or love. The film mainly lives on the premise and the two main characters. But gradually it seems to get a bit stuck and the end is rather abrupt.
It's never going to be a real top movie, but I did enjoy myself the whole way through. The film has the necessary charm, the 2 actors have sufficient charisma and the supporting roles provide that little bit extra. A beautiful movie.

The screwball comedy represents turbulence. Turbulent conditions. Turbulent relationships. Turbulent situations. In the screwball there is also always a dominant woman who very self-consciously dominates the male partner. All these elements can be found in The Lady Eve. A film in which the relationship between Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck is central. The wealthy Fonda returns to New York by luxury ship after an expedition in the Amazon. During the journey he meets the seductive Stanwyck with whom he immediately falls in love.
Henry Fonda as decent, inexperienced and naive millionaire's son who is no match for the seasoned Barbara Stanwyck who exudes a self-confident sensuality that is overwhelming. Violent emotions, misunderstandings and communication problems arise. They are played excellently by the two protagonists. It's a pity that the quality of the dialogues is somewhat disappointing. The word fights that are so characteristic in such films are missing. And so the fire is a bit lacking in the confrontations between Fonda and Stanwyck.
Although the film has its comedic moments, those moments are not so much with the dialogues between the characters. Somewhat disappointing. Especially in screwball-like films, I really look forward to that. The comedy used here is much more situational comedy. A type of comedy that I love, but which looks a bit stale here. And that lack of laughable moments ultimately detracts somewhat from the viewing pleasure.
