With George Raft and James Cagney you have two icons of the Warner Bros. gangster cycle together. Cagney plays Frank Ross, a journalist whose investigations into high-level corruption lead to a ruse that leads to an innocent man being jailed for manslaughter. George Raft plays Stacey, a seasoned fellow inmate who manages to befriend Frank and who has a great influence on him. Cagney's character isn't written very well and is subject to exaggerated swings in character, but with his energy and acting talent he manages to keep the viewer from losing attention. The image of prison life is also a bit thick, but the two stars nevertheless ensure that this film never gets boring and is therefore still worth a look.

Good film about a journalist who innocently ends up in prison because of a fatal accident. A fairly typical 1930s crime film that is easy to look away from. The story is fast paced and plenty happens. The many scenes in the prison are all good. James Cagney with his characteristic head does what he does best.

This is more almost a prison movie than a crime noir, don't get me wrong, as a story of how brutal the prison system is this movie (maybe one of the oldest I've ever seen) certainly succeeds.

The main plot ( Cagney being framed and convicted innocent ) occasionally fades into the background but the story is strong and that is not necessarily a downside , Cagney plays strong as always .
