Poverty, Inc. plot
How can you compete with free? That is one of the big problems of small entrepreneurs in developing countries, who try to sell food or other products, but see the market ruined by aid organizations that give out everything for free. For example, there are many more unintended negative effects of development aid, which are discussed in this film. Benefactors feel good by helping poor people, but they are contributing to a paternalistic system that perpetuates poverty, argue various interviewees. In the meantime, a lucrative “poverty industry” has emerged, from which many people earn a lot of money. The documentary points to many sore spots and tries to make it clear, with various moving graphs that make the complex subject matter clear, that things must and can be done differently.
