Mediocre film in which a married man and woman meet in a bookshop. A romantic drama about an extramarital relationship that does not quite work because the love between the two main characters does not come across as believable. Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro are doing nothing wrong, but their characters are a bit on the bland side. Some nice scenes, but not enough for 3.0 stars.

The sparks don't really fly between DeNiro and Streep, despite the fact that they act pretty okay. I just don't really see DeNiro as a swooning romantic and besides, he plays quite a boring, meaningless guy in the film. Streep also knows little to contribute, so we watch a film for a long time at an affair that has little credibility.

Occasionally there are some creative cinematographic finds, but it doesn't really mean much. It's not Bridges of Madison County, let alone Before Sunrise, just to name two films that came to my mind while watching.

Wafer-thin and predictable script, but also sweet and touching. De Niro and Streep play two rather awkward characters who have little to say, yet it is nice to see how they grow together.

My 41st De Niro and this is probably the most anonymous role I've seen him in yet.

Also nice to see Jane Kaczmarek in a different role, 16 years before her breakthrough as the mother of Malcolm in the Middle.

A Bridges of Madison County, which has been mentioned here before and also came to mind while watching, is 10 levels higher.
