The Old Dark House (1932)

The film in which a group of people end up at an old house due to bad weather is already quite atmospheric. But the constant rain and thunder helps even more to create an attractive production. The setting is beautiful, but I was a bit disappointed in terms of tension. On the other hand, there is once again a strong role from Boris Karloff as a 'mute' butler who comes across as quite creepy with his slightly battered face. The ending is quite entertaining if Saul is allowed to indulge .

It was pleasantly disturbed by the "reader" downstairs ('downstairs' for me) and he hit the mark. There are few or no "normal" types walking around the house where our friends end up. They all have a screw loose. For a film that is almost 86 years old, it is still quite manageable and the stories from that time (as long as they are not about sex) are not much different than those of our time. The only thing you have to get used to, and which is no longer noticeable after a short time, is the black and white image. And the sound is quite loud.

About black and white, I grew up in the late 60s with black and white images and therefore it will be easier for me to switch over?

The story is fascinating and grabs the viewer(s) quite quickly with a trip through the mountains in bad weather. And then of course it is a relief during that period to see an inviting house standing in the cold. The first meeting is not exactly inviting, but what if you have no choice?

Unfortunately, the story did not captivate me, but the setting and atmosphere are very strong here. The old dark house is a great setting thanks to the storm present, the rooms that are only lit with a few candles and the very strange characters. Ultimately, however, the whole story surrounding a strange family is disappointing despite these positive points. The Saul/David Bible story didn't really work and it doesn't want to be really exciting. 5/10
