Cerný Petr plot

The film shows us a few days in the life of seventeen-year-old Peter. Peter goes to work for the first time. He is a security guard in a busy self-service store, but things are not going well. In the evenings he goes dancing, but he is certainly not a star at that either. His father also regularly tells him that he is a good-for-nothing. And then he falls in love.

In Cerný Petr we see some days in the life of growing up Petr. And unfortunately I didn't find it very interesting. We see the daily struggles - conservative parents who mainly like to grumble, his puppy love with Pavla, a job in a store that he is not very good at, and some interactions with friends and other local teenagers. This results in some pretty fun scenes (I won't soon forget the Ahoy! scene at the dance party), but overall Cerný Petr was quite boring. Petr is a very real, but not that interesting teenager, his friends and girlfriend are the same, and the generations portrayed (the sullen older one and the more free-spirited younger one) were simply not that recognizable to me. Too bad, I found the straightforward farce The Firemen's Ball quite entertaining, but this film didn't do it for me.

Milos Forman likes to observe. We have known that for a long time and with this "Black Peter" we know that he did that from his first directorial work.

The film is a look at the lives of several young people in Czechoslovakia in the 1960s, before the Prague Spring but already under the spell of strife and other Western influences.

It's funny to see how awkward they were in their dealings with the opposite sex, how little they actually knew and, in the case of Peter, had to fight against a parental authority that did not grant them any privacy and at the same time did not spare them from painful criticism.

There is not much pace in the film, but it is not boring because the scenes are so simple, subliminally humorous, with close-ups of people - especially the girls in the ballroom - in their natural fuss, the attitude of the parents is unimaginable no longer of our time and the twist numbers are beautifully reproduced.

All young actors perform well in their roles as innocent teenagers.

The Czechoslovakian film from the 60s. So recognizable.

Miloš Forman is best known for his English-language work, but his early period is also worth exploring. He is in line with the social realism of that period. That means that for once it is not about the richest segment of the population, but about an ordinary boy with the glamorous job of... shop detective! And it turns out he's not very good at that...

Body language and clothing say a lot about the characters. Petr walks with his shoulders hunched forward, which indicates uncertainty. His father gives a sermon with his thumbs behind his suspenders, in an attempt to project authority and life experience. Pavla wears a bracelet with charms, which shows her romantic nature.

A central theme is the generation gap. The old generation has a work ethic and conservative norms and values. The young people mainly want to have fun and be enthusiastic about Western pop culture. The elderly listen to the accordion, the local wind band and polkas. Young people play guitar and dance twist or rock 'n' roll. The reaction to the lying nude is also different. There is a contrast between the odalisque and the madonna.

You can see hidden political criticism in it. Just like the shopkeeper, the Czechoslovak regime also had a whole system for spying on the people. With humor and social and psychological insight, Forman shows what it was like to grow up in a satellite state.
