The Stranglers of Bombay plot

"This is true! This is real! This actually happened!"

In India, a murderous religious sect leaves a trail of death and destruction; especially traveling salesmen have to suffer. The disappearances are increasing and because this makes trade more difficult, the British trading company is forced to take steps against the cult. They send a high-ranking officer, who has absolutely no connection with India, to investigate.

An entertaining exotic Hammer film.

Small in size, and the exterior locations don't really look convincingly Indian.

Still enjoyable, thanks to the well-chosen cast and Terence Fischer's direction.

Guy Rolfe (Capt. Harry Lewis) has charisma.

I had to look closely because in most of the roles I saw of him he wore beards, which gave him a mean look.

How different it is here.

The towering ex-boxer and racing driver could also act quite well.

His co-stars are also excellently chosen.

When looking for an arrogant British officer for films, Allan Cuthbertson was the obvious choice.

He just had the looks for it.

This works optimally here too.

George Pastell is convincing as the high priest of Kali's strangler sect.

This native Greek was invariably cast in exotic roles.

I recognized the Norwegian actor Tutte Lemkow (Ram Das) from his role in The Guns of Navarone (in which he played a Greek traitor)

Jan Holden (Mary Lewis) is a pleasant presence.

In reality, she spent her childhood in India, so she fits the picture nicely.

Marie Devereux, prominently featured in the film's publicity photos, with her stunning cleavage, plays no significant role and has no lines.

In addition, the aforementioned photos show more of the former nude model's ample bosom than is the case in the film.

A bit prudish of Hammer actually.

All in all a nice film in eye-catching (black and white and widescreen) picture quality released on DVD.

Can be found in the DVD box "Icons Of Adventure", together with the Hammer productions: The Pirates of Blood River, The Devil-Ship Pirates and The Terror of The Tongs.

An exotic adventure film that, in true Hammer tradition, also relies on horror. Eyes are gouged out and hands chopped off, though most of this happens off-screen. Nevertheless, a gripping story that holds your attention.

The film was initially intended to be shot in color, but in the end, black and white was chosen. This saved money, and it was also thought to enhance the documentary character of the "true" horror. Unlike "realistic" films like Camp on Blood Island and Yesterday's Enemy from Hammerstal, I do miss the color of vibrant India here.

Within Hammer's horror genre, this is one of the odd ones out. It's worth seeing.
