Jesus Franco: great filmmaker.

Horror, sex and preferably both in one.

Of course there is a lot of rubble in there (Virgin Among The Living Dead for example).

But also the necessary entertaining sick films, bizarre horror and bizarre eroticism.

This starts off a bit like chic soft porn a la Emmanuele, but we gradually discover that the brother and sister are also members of a sect that worships Marquis de Sade and also sacrifices people in their rituals.

Clubje is led by Christopher Lee, who went a bit far outside his horror habitat.

But as mentioned, pure sex wasn't enough for Franco.

Yet the combination of eroticism and sadism works well.

Not least because of two beautifully beautiful actresses in the leading roles.

All slightly less literary than Franco's other great ero film (Succubus/Necronomicon-Getraumte Sünden) but it has atmosphere and exudes eroticism.

And I always found it strange that so little has been done with eroticism in the entire film industry.

Okay, lots of porn and Tyrolean films, but that all has little to do with eroticism.

I think this is a nice sex film: soft porn, but with some story and a little horror sauce.

Not the best Franco. Eugenie has a simple premise that never overwhelms. The scenes that are supposed to have something to offer visually are very little and are just way too easy. Especially the one with the red glow. Put a Suspiria next to it and it means nothing. Furthermore, Eugenie's downfall never becomes interesting. The characters do not carry the film and the quasi-intellectual approach with the miscast Christopher Lee is misplaced. I haven't seen many Franco's yet, but I can't imagine that this must be one of his better works.

I don't mind Jess Franco's films. I also found this film disappointing, better than Vampyros Lesbos - which was just bad - but less than Justine, which I still think is his best film so far. Visually I didn't like it at all, that red glow wasn't necessary for me and the film just didn't fascinate me. Maybe I just expected too much, since it was an adaptation of a book by De Sade.
