In Her Shoes plot

"Friends. Rivals. Sisters."

Maggie and Rose are sisters, but they differ like night and day. Maggie is beautiful and sexy, a little shallow and charming. She loves to shop but has no home, career and money. Rose is two years older and looks nothing like Maggie. She is a lawyer and has already arranged her pension provision. She is in a relationship with a divorced colleague, which she hopes will culminate in marriage. When Maggie loses her job at her umpteenth job, she turns to Rose for help, who once again tries to help her sister. But when it turns out that Maggie not only prefers Rose's shoes, but also her lover, their already shaky relationship derails. Then Ella comes into their lives: their grandmother whom they have not seen in twenty years. She brings Maggie and Rose together in her Florida home, which leads to both hilarious and heartbreaking entanglements.

Although this is a drama / comedy which is mainly intended for women, I thought it was quite a nice movie to watch (is a bit on the long side). The story has little to do personally and was perhaps a tad cliché, but the execution was fun and well done and the actresses clearly had fun in this film. The actresses make this movie anyway. I think Toni Collette is a good and fun actress and she also plays strong in this film, the same goes for veteran Shirley MacLaine. Cameron Diaz is not a super actress but she more than makes up for that with her beautiful body which was often seen (like the bikini scene by the pool). All in all I had a good time with this movie and it looked pretty good too.

A film that I ignored for a long time, because I was under the impression that I had already seen it. After seeing the trailer I came to the conclusion that this is not the case. And I certainly didn't regret checking it again just to be sure.

The movie got me right, but it annoyed me a lot with Diaz. She didn't start the movie very well. From the moment she left for her grandmother, it made a world of difference and she seemed to fit her role much better. Collette had her ups and downs. One minute I really liked her and the next I sighed again because of the dramatic level of acting. Fortunately, Diaz and Collette were well attuned to each other and you could feel the click between them. MacLaine plays the best by far and really enjoyed her performance the most.

I really liked the idea of the retirement home and I really enjoyed it at times. Moments with laughter and tears in which drama and comedy were well combined. The rest of the story is full of clichés and predictable. It's just a very nice film to have seen, 3.5*.

Sentimental feel-good movie with good acting - in the end overacting - and glad to see Shirley again, as grandma, I would say.

The relationship between the two sisters is excellent
