Excellent road movie in which two Marines get a job to escort a prisoner. Excellently written characters and dialogue. Because the film was shot entirely on location, it looks authentic and also forms a beautiful image of the time. Funny and moving. Jack Nicholson is sublime and has plenty of moments to let himself go. The young Randy Quaid knows more than just how to survive.

Beautiful.

With enough variation and a successful balance between comedy and drama, The Last Detail knows how to captivate from start to finish. The absurdity of the situation - 8 years in prison for stealing nothing - is well exploited in the beginning, but fortunately people don't keep rambling about it either.

Randy Quaid certainly does a good job as a young thief, but no matter how you look at it: Jack Nicholson is a superpower. Here he puts down a trial version of Randall McMurphy: a little crazy but above all good of nature.

Director Hal Ashby ensures a fairly quick course. This is of course not a fast film, but the playing time is short and lightness is sufficiently varied by strong drama scenes (and vice versa). The scene in the brothel takes the cake.

3.5

Strong film, often very funny, with a wonderfully deranged lead for Jack Nicholson; this is clearly the format for the next One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest right here. The apparently simple plot is beautifully and unpredictably worked out, with many beautiful details and good acting from the other two protagonists, Otis Young and Randy Quaid. Wonderful coarse dialogues too.
