In the majority of his films, Bob Hope played the role of a charming coward who constantly manages to get himself into trouble through love or some other misunderstanding. In this military comedy, he plays Don Bolton, a successful 32-year-old actor who becomes terrified when the government announces its intention to conscript every single person aged 21 to 40. He then tries to win the hand of Antoinette Fairbanks [Dorothy Lamour, Hope and Bing Crosby's regular co-star in the successful The Road To series], the daughter of a high-ranking military officer, as quickly as possible. But just when he has received her consent, Don hears that the bill has been amended and that he therefore does not have to serve at all. When he tries to back out, Antoinette accuses him of cowardice, and Don must prove himself by volunteering for conscription. Naturally, he makes sure it is all staged... but just as naturally, his little plan falls apart, and before he knows it, he is under the direct command of General Fairbanks, Antoinette's father.

Bob Hope plays his role with verve and—as with all his vehicles—is largely dependent on the quality of the script and, above all, the jokes. Although Caught In The Draft in 2017 doesn't contain many surprises, it is a film that typically fits into the 'just fun' category. No pretension, but good for a continuous smile and the occasional hearty chuckle. Hope and Lamour are a perfect match, and all the supporting actors also shine. And with that, the film succeeds in its purpose: to entertain the audience, nothing more and nothing less.

Bob bumbles his way through various branches of the army in a desperate attempt to win over Dottie, but unfortunately, she is the colonel's daughter, who understandably doesn't see much potential in Bob. Hope's assistant (Eddie Bracken) and "agent" (Lynne Overman) have also enlisted for convenience and help their boss overcome the worst obstacles, but they too are powerless against the problem-magnet Hope has to play here. In a tank, on a parachute, on a horse, behind a gun – I believe the only thing I didn't see Bob in was a submarine, and all the while he keeps trying almost compulsively to control his nervousness with one-liners. As I often remark about his films, anyone who can't handle that shouldn't bother starting this one, but personally, I find it quite amusing. Not Hope's best, certainly not in *this* period when he was racking up successes, but definitely more entertaining than average.
