Janis Joplin is one of the most revered and iconic rock & roll singers of all time, a tragic and misunderstood figure who captivated millions of listeners and forged new creative paths before her death in 1970 at the age of 27. Director Amy Berg explored Joplin's story in the depth. A portrait of a complicated, passionate and often beleaguered artist. Joplin's own words recount a series of letters she wrote to her family over the years. Janis was full of energy when she sang. Her meteoric rise and untimely death changed music forever.

Not a particularly creative documentary, but I can enjoy these kinds of films. You notice that there is a lot of footage, that the right witnesses are there and that a lot of time and energy has been put into the documentary. It gives a nice (clear) picture of the singer before she died much too young and became a member of the lamented 27 Club. Narrated by singer Cat Power, although the images speak for themselves of course. Director Amy J. Berg is first and foremost a qualitative documentary maker and less creative in working with the music itself (think films like Amy, Lemmy or Cobain: Montage of Heck).

In 1970, American Janis Joplin (known for her cover of "Me and Bobby McGee") was the forerunner of Amy Winhouse, a talented singer who succumbed at the age of 27 to a combination of alcohol, drugs and performance pressure.

In this Documentary / Biography film (full of previously unseen material) we follow Janis Joplin's life based on her personal letters that she wrote to her family, friends and colleagues. The documentary does not break new ground in terms of form or content, but it does its job properly. We see Janis Joplin at "Monterey Pop" and of course "Woodstock". What the film shows above all is that Janis Joplin only felt at home on stage, and was always deeply unhappy outside of it.

All in all a nice journalistic Documentary / Biography film about music legend Janis Joplin, who died in 1970 of a heroin overdose.

Berg paints a fascinating portrait of blues singer Janis Joplin, who died in 1970 at the age of 27 as a result of a heroin overdose. Family, childhood friends and musicians (including those from Big Brother Holding Company) recall memories that confirm the image that Joplin paints in the letters she wrote in the final phase of her life, read by Cat Power. Of course, highlights such as Monterey Pop 1967 and Woodstock are included, but Berg ensures that the music never overshadows the special, tragic story behind the myth.
