Mr. Wong in Chinatown plot

A Chinese woman asks for help from Inspector James Lee Wong, but is killed with a poison arrow not long after. Wong begins the investigation, and discovers that the lady is actually Princess Lin Hwa, and was sent on a secret mission to prepare for the Japanese invasion of America.

Mr. Wong (played by Boris Karloff and in one film by Keye Luke) is a quiet, shrewd Chinese detective in San Francisco, in a series of six films initiated by Monogram in an attempt to cash in on the success of Oriental sleuth Charlie Chan ( Warner Oland, Sidney Toler and Roland Winters) and Mr Moto (the immortal Peter Lorre). Let's just say that grain didn't really turn out to be a successful crop.

This episode is not bad, with Karloff who is always fascinating and a nice atmosphere, but Marjorie Reynolds as wisecrackin' platinum-blonde reporter and Grant Withers as a screaming pseudo-comic frustrated police inspector are two equally clichéd as annoying characters, and the plot is not very interesting.
