Nicholas and Alexandra plot

"...is the story of the love that changed the world forever!"

Early 20th century, Moscow. Tsar Nicholas II has problems with the war with Japan, which seems unwinnable. His joy at the birth of his first son is overshadowed by the discovery that the boy has hemophilia. His wife is very much influenced by Rasputin, who claims to have healing powers. The people want a Duma and don't believe their tsar wants to do anything. The mounting problems lead to a world war and a popular uprising.

Every now and then, you discover a film you’ve never heard of before that turns out to be a major production. You then wonder how a film like this has fallen into oblivion. Since this film has quite a lot in common with Dr. Zhivago—both in story and style—that is perhaps where the answer lies. Despite the running time of over three hours, this film managed to hold my attention, and that is mainly due to the lead actor, who portrays a believable Tsar Nicholas. Fortunately, the cringe-worthy romantic moments remain within limits, and the strong cast keeps this film afloat. I had hoped to see a bit more of the battlefields with the Germans, but that was clearly not the focus, just like its predecessor. All in all, I give this film a solid passing grade.

Reconstruction of the Russian Revolution is told from the perspective of Nicholas II [Michael Jayston], the last Tsar of Russia, and his wife Alexandra [Janet Suzman]. In his Russia trilogy, Sergei M. Eisenstein had already told the Bolshevik side of the story, and in Doctor Zhivago (1965), David Lean approached the same events from a more human perspective. This biography reveals the weaknesses of the Tsar, who paid insufficient attention to the changing status of his family and relied too much on support from his family in Europe. Naturally, all the iconic figures from the period make an appearance, with Tom Baker being particularly impressive as Rasputin, and quite a few top names from the British film world appear in small roles (including Laurence Olivier, Michael Redgrave, Harry Andrews, and Jack Hawkins), but Jayston and Suzman tower above everything with excellent acting performances. The mass scenes are often impressive, and the Oscars for Art Direction/Set Decoration and Costumes, respectively, are absolutely well-deserved. You won't soon forget the final scene. Criticized at the time for its running time, but as far as I'm concerned, not a single frame is wasted.

Just aired on the BBC. Always good in itself, a historical drama. Really a film that could have been made in the 50s or 60s. Lots of dramatic glances and therefore close-ups. Was able to spot many actors who became famous later on. A lot of time was taken to work towards the inevitable ending.
