Lately I've finally dived into Clark's oeuvre a bit, and of course this controversial film can't be missed. He disappointed me a bit. It is certainly not bad and the film manages to captivate the full length, but it completely lacks the punch that a Ken Park had. There were often those moments where I got the impression that Clark meant them to be shocking, but in the end they weren't. Hope boring and banal quirky too, in 2016 I don't think it's very daring anymore. I fully agree with Harmjan's review. 2.5* stars.

A lot more intense than I expected actually. In the end I thought Kids was a pretty nasty movie in the sense that a lot of heavy shit happens. It is not strange to me that teenagers experiment with drugs and sex. I was also that age, even though I didn't go nearly as far as the main characters here do. It was uncomfortable to watch this. I realized that today's youth is actually just as extreme, even if AIDS plays a much smaller role than it was in the 1980s and 1990s. That a boy mainly bullies young ladies in bed is not really fresh, but the knowledge that (even if he is not aware) he is ruining young innocent lives, makes it very bad. Furthermore, it is a lot of typical slang (incl. content). The way these young people look at life and how they deal with it is much more gripping than the vilest horror films I've seen. A big 5* in terms of impact, but I don't think I'll ever have to see this film again. so 3*.

This was only my second Clark, after Bully. And then this is a setback.

It is clear that you are not going to watch Clark's films for fun. These are very depressing movies. Well, I had that a little more with Bully, but Kids isn't a feel-good film either. You are immersed in the misery of a few street sluts who do nothing else, use drugs, have (unsafe) sex and argue. The boys seem to have no brakes at all.

A downside of this film is that Clark registers it, but does little else with it. It is shocking at times, but Bully was grayer and darker, making it harder to come in. Maybe it's also due to the acting that wasn't too impressive.

Fortunately, it still contains a basic quality, although that will mainly be because Clark goes a little further in all the misery than most. I have become curious about Ken Park.

2.5*
