Brandon Teena is the popular new kid in a small Nebraska town. He is a hero to his friends: he drinks, fights and he likes to hit on girls. He meets the handsome Lana, who has never met such a sensitive and attentive boy. Yet his life is not all roses and moons: after all, a heavy burden rests on his shoulders. In reality, he is Teena Brandon, a girl going through a sexual identity crisis. When her friends from the trailer park discover that Teena is a girl, she is dealt with very harshly.

In 1993, director Kimberly Peirce read a newspaper report about a girl who had pretended to be a boy for years. When her secret was discovered, she was raped and murdered. This sad story prompted Kimberly Peirce to make a Drama/Biography film about Teena Brandon's final weeks.
Teena Brandon (Hilary Swank) is born as a girl, but wants to become a man. She receives hormone therapy in preparation for the operation and goes through life as a man with short hair and tied breasts. She also decides to move and introduces herself to her new friends as Brandon Teena. When they find out the truth, they react with no understanding, just like the other inhabitants of the village.
Slowly the film becomes more and more gruesome and it is almost painful to keep watching. A great film that really grabs you by the throat. Teena Brandon is played incomparably by Hilary Swank, who won an "Oscar" for her portrayal. Haalrol makes much of the quality of this saddening drama, but the well-written screenplay full of lifelike characters is also worthy of praise. Hilary Swank prepared herself by living as a man herself for a month, with her body constricted and socks tucked in her pants. Chloë Sevigny (who was also nominated for an "Oscar" but didn't win) has a nice supporting role as Brandon's love-hungry girlfriend, who doesn't want to think too much.
All in all, a gripping Drama/Biography film about Teena Brandon, with strong roles from Hilary Swank and Chloë Sevigny, who were perfectly chosen for this story.

It wasn't until the credits that I realized that this is a true story. I can imagine that this must have led to strong reactions from those involved. Sexually different people will always be under pressure, although Teena is mainly the victim of her own lies and she should have said she was a lesbian from the start. Brilliant role by Hillary Swank, but especially Chloë Sevigny plays the tiles of the roof in this moving film. Good soundtrack too. Started the film with a bit of reluctance, but it turned out very well, although this is not really my genre. 4 stars
