What an actor, that Gabin! He alone makes this film worth watching. Luckily, YouTube offers us that opportunity. And the script? "Taken from reality," captivating from start to finish.

First of all, this isn't a crime film. People might think so because it's based on Simenon, but that's not true. Gabin portrays a very surly character, a rich and powerful businessman from La Rochelle who is known by everyone... loved? That's something else entirely. Laughed at? Yes, after his wife disappears from home with a lover, while he's the only one who knows nothing about it. "Un cocu," as they call it in a lovely French word. The entire film is essentially a search for left and right in the city. Gabin, here at the height of his career (the 1950s), plays flawlessly, as usual, but a climax is missing, and the ending between him and his wife is far too easy and therefore disappointing.
