The dwarf girl Charlotte lives a sheltered existence, together with her mother Leonor in an Argentine village. Until the rich bachelor Ludovico D'Andrea (Marcello Mastrioanni) from a foreign country comes to live in the village. He falls madly in love with Charlotte and proposes to her. Her disability is never mentioned. When a circus comes to the village, Charlotte can't resist the call....
