"What if you had a second chance with the one that got away?"

Nine years ago, American Jesse and French Celine spent a perfect day together in Vienna. Now, 9 years later, they meet again for the first time since. Jesse is in Paris to promote his book on the events of that day. In the small hour and a half that the two have before Jesse has to go to the airport, the two catch up on what has happened in their lives since then. It soon becomes apparent how great the impact of their previous meeting has been on their lives over the past decade.

I enjoyed the first part that can portray love and romance like no other film. This sequel is getting close to me now. Just the questions you have as a 30-something about old loves, what ifs and the search for a balance between love, romance and reality. And whether there is still room for romance.

Hawke and Delpy are back on track, a wonderful duo that complement each other fantastically. The dialogues go from awkward to various topics of conversation until they finally say what they think. That moment is wonderful to watch. You feel the release of the characters who pour out their hearts after chatting for a long time. Speak what they are thinking about. And especially Delpy is very strong in this.

The film lacks that little bit more of Before sunrise, because of the decoration. Vienna was used more as a backdrop than Paris. Not that one city is better than the other, but it enhanced that atmosphere. I must say that the choice to choose the nocturnal romance in the first film and to go earlier to the early evening for Before sunset is appropriate. The dialogues remain spicy and so natural. The ending is nicely done. Looking forward to the 3rd part. Maybe I'm still too young to go all the way there, but we'll see.

“Baby, you are gonna miss that plane.”

“I know.”

Before Sunset remains pure movie magic. Jesse and Celine run into each other in Paris, after not speaking to each other for nine years, and it's like old times. The fooling around, the jokes, the conversations about love, work, family and what is happening in the world etc. It all looks lifelike. That's because Delpy and Hawke are geniuses again, but Linklater also deserves all the credits. Rarely have I seen two actors who have as much chemistry together as Hawke and Delpy, and when Jesse and Céline reunite nine years after Sunrise, it immediately feels familiar, and time has stood still.

But time hasn't stood still, and both Jesse and Celine are older, wiser, less naive and both have some relationship scratches. Jesse is a successful writer who has written a book about their meeting in Vienna, and Celine is committed to the environment. Jesse is married, but as soon as Delpy throws her hair loose in the cafe you already know that he is sold. In Sunrise there is a bit more at stake because now they really have to make a choice for each other (or not). Their togetherness therefore starts superficially with conversations about work, personal views and philosophizing about life, but as soon as they step on the canal boat, something changes and it goes a bit more in depth. About lost time, the deep love that is clearly still there and all kinds of pent up emotions that come to the surface. In the taxi ride to Celine's house, this comes to an unparalleled outburst that leads to the best scene in the entire trilogy. The last scene in the apartment still gives me goosebumps, and you realize right away that there was really only one right choice for Jesse and Celine all along.

At the end of a nighttime wandering through Vienna in Before Sunrise (1995), Jesse Wallace [Ethan Hawke] and Céline [Julie Delpy] promised to meet again in exactly 6 months in the same place. Nine years later is in Paris to present a book inspired by their short-lived romance. When Céline appears during a book launch in Paris, they decide to catch up for the rest of the day until Jesse takes the plane back to the US at 7:30 PM. Follows the same formula as Before Sunset and thus lacks originality, but the collaboration between the director and both actors once again bears fruit in the form of spontaneous-looking dialogues full of sometimes light-hearted, sometimes profound, but always striking reflections on how the outlook on life changes as you exchange the dreaminess of your early 20s for pragmatism.
